Congratulations! Expecting a new little one is an exciting time for you and your family!

Whether this is your first or your fourth pregnancy, if you have chosen to breastfeed your baby, you want to be prepared. A prenatal lactation consult will help you make a plan for breastfeeding your new little one. We will tailor your plan to your needs, based on your expectations, experiences, and goals. You will receive up-to-date information on getting breastfeeding off to a good start, how to establish a comfortable latch, how to know if baby is getting enough milk, how to overcome common challenges, how to know what tools you will need (and won’t!), and whatever else you might be on your mind. Then, we will develop a plan and prepare you to advocate for yourself and your baby so you can meet your goals.

Generally, a prenatal consult takes about 60 - 90 minutes, and you can expect that we will:

• discuss any previous breastfeeding experience

• review your birth plan and discuss how birth impacts the initiation of breastfeeding

• discuss your goals for breastfeeding

• provide education about latch, positioning, getting nursing off to a good start, and other breastfeeding basics

• provide information about how to know if baby is getting enough milk

• make a list of tools you might need, such as pumps, nursing pillows, other supplies

• address concerns and strategize on how to overcome common challenges

• develop a list of resources to review before your birth and to have on hand once baby arrives

Travel fee (in-home visits only): $30 if over 30-minutes travel time
